fares for the system
The System's ways to pay for a ride has changed drastically, from the token to the MetroCard, and prices going up. From the inauguration of the BRT until the unified system of 1948 the ride fare for any length was five cents, the fare was increased to ten cents then has steadily risen since then. The price now is two dollars fare for any length of ride. Token sucking was a common scam to get tokens for free, somebody would jam the entrance gate with paper and then when the person left they would suck out the coin with there mouth, as long as no police were around. "The Token War with Connecticut" was when people discovered that the coins for the Connecticut turnpike was the same shape and size as the tokens for the subway, and they costed less, some people would get Connecticut turnpike coins and use them in the subway, in 1985 Connecticut discontinued these coins and had to pay 17.5 cents for the more than two million coins that were used instead of the subway tokens. IN 1993 the MetroCard was introduced, which was like a credit card used for the subway, it was enhanced in 1997 to allow passengers to make free transfers from subway to bus.
